Cow Smith History

Cow Smith, a tribute to previous owner, Cal Smith, was built around the late 1920s or early 1930s. Originally built with concrete block with a petrified stone façade, C.S. is a unique building that mirrors the unique and quirky vibe that exists in Bluff Dale, Texas. Shelbie, an interior designer and historic preservationist, bought the building in December of 2016 and began work on her birthday in January of 2017. She actually took art lessons from renowned local artist Judy Crowe in the building. Little did she know that she would one day own the building!

Shelbie designed and oversaw the construction of the new additions. The kitchenette, pantry, two bathrooms, and covered patio are all brand new. When visiting Cow Smith, it is hard to tell what is new and what is old. Shelbie’s main objective when designing the new spaces was to trick the visitor into thinking the whole space is original to the property.

When visiting, make sure to look for special details throughout the building. Can you find the squirrel? What about the cowboy and cowgirl figurines? Check out the new patio stone wall built with sandstone, limestone and petrified wood which ties in with the original storefront facade. Shelbie gathered all the stone off her husbands’ farm in Bluff Dale. Also, do you see the little niche with Our Lady of Guadalupe?

An intimate and affordable space, Cow Smith can host 40-50 folks (including main hall and covered patio) comfortably. Not just a room with four walls, C.S. has the vintage charm of an old gas station. It’s like stepping back in time! The building boasts heat and air conditioning, two bathrooms, plenty of space for caterers in the kitchenette and pantry. Vintage tables and chairs are included for your event or can be completely removed. For entertainment, you may hire a band or use the in-house juke box!
